Studio

From Prof. Scogin:

What is architecture’s role today in defining a society of the humane? Can the architecture discipline continue to sustain its unique ability to sponsor uncompromised difference in a world where the exceptional is re-defined almost daily and the relationship between the singular and the collective is blurred of distinction in service to the integrative?

The studio will be like a gaggle of cavemen and cavewomen decorating themselves out of the cave.

Program

Based on my obsession, the specific program given to me:
Waiting Room for Plastic Surgeon.

Facts

Plastic Surgery is composed of Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery, though common usage often refers solely to the latter.

By dollar, USA has the largest cosmetic surgery industry in the world.

South Korea has the highest percentage of population having undergone some form of plastic surgery.

China's cosmetic surgery industry is growing rapidly, estimated to be around 20% growth per year for recent years.

Among China, Japan and Korea, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures are double slit operation, nose implants, and breast implants - Asians are trying to have more Caucasian features through surgery

(non)Duality

The obsessive exploration of black and white foreshadows a series of dualistic opposition:

Beautiful / Ugly
Natural / Artificial
Material / Immaterial
Necessity / Excess
Real / Imaginary
Singular / Universal

The Waiting Room is a space that suspends these oppositions.

"In Asia, it's very common for patients to want more Western-looking eyes,"
Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Form

symmetry Symmetry and golden ratio - contested concepts in architecture - are fundamental to cosmetic plastic surgery.

The surgery, performed by Sir Harold Delf Gillies in 1917, was some of the first to use a skin flap from an unaffected area of the body.

Terraced Rice-fields: the most artificial, necessary and beautiful of landscapes.

Approach / Sequence

As the private helicopters arranged for your reservation lands at the helicopter pad of our arrival building , you would be greeted by our friendly staff who would also take care of all of your luggages.

Exiting through a 50m long tunnel, you find yourself on a hanging walkway. As the walkway leads you to a 90 degree turning point, a spectacular view of terraced rice fields down the cliff suddenly appears in front of you. Continuing down the walkway and one finds an elevator that decends a huge artificial cut in the landscape.

At the bottom of the cliff, just after stepping out of the elevator, a fork of near identical paths awaits. Either path would lead you down into the main building (waiting room), where you may check-in to your tranquil and spacious room.

On the day of your operation, our staff would lead you to exit the building where you would have to decend into the valley and cross a 120m long, double-deck wooden suspension bridge to reach the operation room on the other side.
